But wait! Your pet also needs love and there\u2019s many ways to show it.<\/p>\n<p>Since our pets love us so unconditionally, make sure to do right by them. You can\u2019t give them chocolate because it\u2019s dangerous to their health. There are many other things you can do to show your pet the love, according to the article, \u201cTen things you can do to show your pets you love them,\u201d at Best Friends. Here are some ideas:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tEnsure you feed your pet a healthy diet. Discuss with your vet and check out the American College of Veterinary Nutrition at acvn.org.<br \/>\n\u2022\tGet out and exercise with your pet. Whether it\u2019s walking, running, flyball, agility or playing games, you and your pet will be better for it. \u201cFor cats, try interactive play with wand toys (we like Da Bird) or balls,\u201d the article said. \u201cSome cats can be taught to enjoy walks outdoors wearing a harness and leash.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\tTry relationship-based training. \u201cReward-based training classes help you to build a relationship with your pet, provide her with mental (and sometimes physical) enrichment, and let you just have fun with her,\u201d the article said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, \u201cWays to Show Your Pet You Love Them\u201d at ASPCA.org, there are other great ways to show your pet some love including:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tSpend an entire day with your pet either on a walk or hike. Try a new adventure or route.<br \/>\n\u2022\tYour pet loves treats, so why not make some homemade ones? \u201cBut be sure that any recipes you choose are pet-friendly and veterinarian approved before making them for your pet,\u201d the ASPCA article said.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to show your pet all the love on Valentine\u2019s Day but also continue to show it throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"dental\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>February is Pet Dental Health Month: The importance of Dentals for Your Pets<\/strong><br \/>\nWe all know how important it is to care for our teeth. Your pet\u2019s dental care is also just as important. Good dental hygiene is important for all-around health for humans and pets.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty common for dogs to have dental disease, according to the article, \u201c5 Reasons Why Dog Dental Care Is Important\u201d at PetMD.com. \u201cBy age 3, over 80 percent of dogs have some form of dental disease, also known as periodontal disease,\u201d the article said. Without proper dental care, it can be serious.<\/p>\n<p>Dental disease in dogs \u201caffects the teeth, gums and structures that support and surround a dog\u2019s teeth,\u201d the article said, adding that it starts with plaque buildup. When that hardens it turns to tartar.<\/p>\n<p>The article advises to watch for the following signs of dental disease in dogs:<br \/>\n\u2022\tBroken teeth<br \/>\n\u2022\tLoose teeth<br \/>\n\u2022\tBad breath<br \/>\n\u2022\tPainful, bleeding mouth<br \/>\n\u2022\tRefuse or unable to eat and drink<br \/>\n\u2022\tDrooling<\/p>\n<p>Other issues to be mindful of include discolored teeth or teeth covered with tartar, and swelling around the mouth, according to the article, \u201cPet dental care\u201d at American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).<\/p>\n<p>If you notice any of the above issues, it\u2019s time for a visit to your veterinarian. Be on top of your pet\u2019s dental health as he may have periodontal disease, the most common dental issue in dogs and cats. Early detection is important. \u201cPeriodontal disease doesn\u2019t just affect your pet\u2019s mouth,\u201d the AVMA article said. \u201cOther health problems found in association with periodontal disease include kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Treatment is done by a dental cleaning by your veterinarian and under anesthesia.<\/p>\n<p>Stay on top of your pet\u2019s dental health by brushing their teeth to keep them healthy between cleanings, the AVMA article said. And, get your pet\u2019s teeth checked yearly.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"spay\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>The Importance of Spay\/Neuter for Pets<\/strong><br \/>\nFebruary is known for Valentine\u2019s Day, and it\u2019s also Spay\/Neuter Awareness Month. Show your pets love by ensuring they are spayed or neutered. It helps to slow down overpopulation of pets and also has many health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>With many reasons to spay\/neuter, there\u2019s no reason not to do it for your pets. \u201cThe average lifespan of spayed and neutered cats and dogs is demonstrably longer than the lifespan of those not,\u201d according to the article, \u201cWhy you should spay\/neuter your pet\u201d at The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).<\/p>\n<p>Unaltered pets are more likely to roam, which puts them at risk of fights with animals. Altered pets are less likely to roam. Additionally, altered pets are less likely to get certain cancers. Altered males are not at risk of testicular cancer. Females who are not spayed are at risk of pyometra and uterine, mammary gland, and other cancers, the HSUS article said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you consider the potential long-term medical costs incurred for an unaltered pet, the savings afforded by spay\/neuter are clear, especially given the plethora of low-cost spay\/neuter clinics now available,\u201d the HSUS article said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, your altered pets are more likely to be better behaved. They will typically be less aggressive and \u201cless likely to engage in territory-marking behavior such as spraying urine in your house,\u201d according to the article, \u201cReasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet\u201d at Fetch by WebMD.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Fetch article, other positives include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tSpayed female cats and dogs will not go into heat.<br \/>\n\u2022\tPets will not gain weight. \u201cA pet who gets enough exercise and eats a healthy diet in moderation will remain fit and healthy,\u201d the Fetch article said.<br \/>\n\u2022\tThe fight against overpopulation of pets helps keep more animals out of shelters.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrate Spay\/Neuter Awareness Month by spreading the word.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Do You Show Your Love for Your Pet on Valentine\u2019s Day?
